as you all may remember, el paso had the honor of having Seven Foot Midget, from las vegas, play for us at a show with Death By Stereo, Kill Your Idols, Good Riddance, The Happy Campers, and locals Spoiler. since they are awesome guys in an awesome band, i thought it would be neat if they had an interview in here... well, it is an interview, and it is about Seven Foot Midget, but this one only includes one member. so this is an exclusive interview with Nick Vincent from Seven Foot Midget. #1 What are all your names, ages, and positions? Nick Whalen (curly fro) - 20 years old - guitar, vox [2] How did you guys meet and when did you decide to become a band? Whalen and I met back in the fourth grade, although if you ask him he often denies knowing me for that long. During our freshman year of high school (1996/1997) we were in a crappy band called Four Cents. That year we met the Losey Bros (they are fraternal twins) through a mutual friend, and we were very impressed with their musical talent. By the time summer rolled around, Whalen and I decided to quit Four Cents and began jamming with Jay and Jonn. We played our first house party later that summer. -3- How long have you been together? Since the summer of '97, so almost 5 years now. #4 Is it still the original lineup from when you first started? Yup. ..5. How did you come up with the name Seven Foot Midget? If we told you, we'd have to kill you. Actually, the first few shows we played under the name Anonymous, but after someone told us there was already a band with that name, we decided we'd better change ours. 6 What are your influences (band wise and other wise)? We all have some pretty diverse influences, so I can't really speak for everybody, but here are a few of mine. Propagandhi, Piebald, Craig's Brother, the Beatles, RKL, Thrice, Radiohead, Cave In. and of course the classics, Bad Religion and NOFX #7 What bands have you played with? A lot. Some of the better-known bands we've been lucky enough to play with are Guttermouth, Death By Stereo, The Ataris, Rufio, Good Riddance, Thrice, Voodoo Glow Skulls 8 What bands have you found to be the most easy going and .... just really nice? We know this rad reggae/punk band from Huntington Beach called HB Surround Sound, and they are the coolest guys on the planet. They are really great friends of ours, as well as awesome musicians, and they are just a total blast to play shows with and to just plain hang out with. Definitely the nicest "bigger" band we've ever had the pleasure of meeting and playing with is Death By Stereo. They are very down-to-earth and fun to talk to, and they don't have any kind of rock star complex at all. Truly a great bunch of guys. Kris Roe from the Ataris and Mark from Guttermouth were both really nice to us as well. 1O Do you have any favorite places to play? We had a ton of fun playing Powell, this little town in Wyoming. There's really nothing to do there, so a ton of kids showed up to the show. Everyone had a great time we got a really good response there. We actually ended up signing autographs for like 15 minutes after we played, it was really weird. And of course we always love playing in Huntington Beach with Surround Sound. II: What do you like best about playing shows??? It's the most amazing feeling when people know the words to a song you wrote, and they are singing along to it with you. 12* Does being in a band in any way affect your personal lives? Yeah, it does for sure. It 's really hard to find time to do everything you want to do, and it's even harder when you are trying to coordinate the schedules of four individuals. We don't have a manager or a record label or a booking agent or anything like that. Everything we do with the band is directly handled and funded by our own efforts and money. It's tough and it doesn't leave us a lot of spare time, but it's also a good feeling to know you're doing something by yourself. _13- What are your plans for the future??? (sounds gay huh) I don't think we have any "gay" plans for the future. haha. We have been working hard on writing new music, and we want to put another album sometime in the near future. We also want to do more touring, especially in California. (14) What do you guys do for fun? I'm not sure any of us really have lives? I5... What's the most interesting place you have been to and why???????? EL PASO! No, not really. I really don't know. I haven't been to many interesting places. Montana is really pretty[?] !6 What do you swear the funnnnnnest games in the world are...... and again, why? Board games or video games? We had a Playstation in the van when we were on tour and we played a lot of Tony Hawk and Bloody Roar II. But it's not really a good idea to try and play Tony Hawk while in a moving vehicle... 17---If you could say/ask absolutely anything to absolutely anyone in the world, who would it be, what would you saayy/asssk?? I hate that question. II 8 How do you feel about your local scene?? It's not the best or anything, but I think we all appreciate it more now that we've played elsewhere. There are a lot of great bands and a lot of great kids here, once you wade through all the scene politics and shit-talking that goes on here. Vegas is tough because it's such a transient town and people come and go all the time. Go to a show, wait a month, then go to another show, and you'll see 50 kids you've never seen before and not many of the ones you saw just a month ago. Bands here also have a really hard time staying together for very long, so I guess we're kinda lucky in that respect. 19= If you could kill any celebrity who would it be and why? That's kind of morbid, isn't it? 2@ Who's your favorite ninja turtle?? I always liked Donatello, because he was the smart one. 2! Favorite movies???????????????????????????? Definitely this movie called High Strung. It's not very well known, and I doubt it was even ever in any theatres, but it's basically a day in the life of this guy who just sits around and bitches and rants about everything. It' s hilarious. If you can find it at the movie rental place definitely check it out. 22_ If you could be any character on the movie The Goonies, who would you be?? I haven't seen the Goonies in a really long time, so who the fuck knows. I guess I could always be that really big ugly dude, but I don't even remember his name at the moment. Wasn't it Sloth or something? I dunno. 23~~>Favorite foods?? Cadbury eggs are really really good until you get like halfway done with them, and then you want to throw up. * 24 * Were any of you in any other bands before seven foot midget? Whalen and I were in Four Cents of course, and Jay was in a band in California back in the day called 6 Foot Midget. They're not around anymore, so we kinda ripped off their name, haha. 25% Any inspiring words or final thoughts or last minute decisions or threats or warnings??? Uhm, let's see. our website is at www.7footmidget.com | |||
